Big data is a term used to refer to very large data sets, for example those generated as part of web-scale data gathering such as social media, or massive scientific experiments such as at CERN. A crucial aspect of big data is that it is typically to large to be processed in a single computer leading to the need for distributed processing such as MapReduce.
